SHS WEB-based Alternative Education
Individual Course Program Information Sheet
Sandy High School offers students the opportunity to attend school online during individual class periods through the Accelerate Education program. For detailed course offerings, virtual tours and other information, please visit the website: http://accelerate-ed.com and/or contact your SHS School Counselor.
SHS Counselors will determine eligibility, space availability, and appropriate placement of students who wish to complete WEB-based individual courses. Once a student has been accepted and enrolled into a WEB-based course, the student will be assigned one period daily in the computer lab in room #72 to complete assignments. A student may also work from any off-campus internet connection to receive instruction and complete assignments as their time allows. It should be expected that each online course will require a minimum of one hour of computer time DAILY for work completion. Some students may need more time per course, depending on the difficulty of subject matter.
All tests must be proctored at SHS in room #72. SHS Educational Assistant JeraLi Blackmon is available to WEB-based students any school day between 8:30am and 5:00pm. In addition to their regularly scheduled class period, students may arrange appointments with Mrs. Blackmon at their convenience by contacting her directly via telephone (503-668-8011 ext. 309) or email (Jerali.blackmon@ortrail.k12.or.us). Minimally, students are expected to communicate with Mrs. Blackmon on a daily basis during their assigned class period regarding current grade and progress in their WEB-based class.
WEB-based courses are graded by semester. Parents and students may access their current grade and progress electronically at any time during the semester at the Accelerate Education website. Sandy High School progress report grades of Satisfactory ("S") or Failing ("F") will be assessed and reported every 6 weeks, just like any other course taken at SHS. If a student has not finished a minimum of 30% of their course content by the first progress report period (6 weeks), and 60% of their course content by the second progress report period (12 weeks) at a minimum achievement level of 60% (D-) or higher, they will not be considered passing and will receive an "F" for that grading period.
Final grades in web-based classes will be recorded as standard letter grades on the student's official transcript, using a standard grading scale. If a student's individual course is completed prior to the end of the semester with time to complete another WEB-based individual course, that student may have an opportunity to take an additional course offering, or choose to take "release" that period for the remainder of the semester. Should a student fail a semester of an individual course, they will be ineligible to continue in the web-based program.
Any books needed for web-based courses will be made available for check out through the SHS Book Depository. At this time all regular high school class textbooks are imbedded in the courses on line, and therefore do not require an additional hardcopy text. AP courses may require additional materials.
The "Credit Recovery Catalog" lists proficiency based individual course offerings for SHS students. Please see your SHS Counselor for individual information.
