This Year's Cleo Award Winner is
Shannon Leary
Shannon was nominated by a group of staff members, and volunteers for this year's Cleo Award, because of her dedication to our school. She volunteers weekly, and will jump in and help where ever she is needed. She volunteers for PTC events, book fair, Breakfast with Santa, prep work for teachers, field trips, Publishing House, but her favorites place to be is right in the classroom with students, helping them learn. With her dedication and patient demeanor, she helps make Firwood a great place to be!
Part of the reason Firwood Elementary is a great place to learn is because of our dedicated volunteers! We always have opportunities for parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and community members to volunteer and continue making Firwood an amazing place to be!

Parents and other community members play an important role in the education of Oregon Trail students. Over the course of a given school year, over 1,000 volunteers will assume the role of tutor, classroom assistant, fundraiser, mentor, organizer, or advisor in one or more of our schools. Research has proven that student achievement increases with the assistance of an organized group of volunteers. But we don’t need statistics to convince us of the critical role our volunteers play. They’re considered part of our education team.
Every school in the Oregon Trail School District has a program through which parents and other community members spend time volunteering their services. With student safety our highest priority, the district board of directors has mandated that all volunteers working with children consent to a criminal history background check. In addition, all volunteers must attend an orientation training session.
