- Comprehensive Distance Learning FAQ's
-
Due to the ongoing health crisis in Oregon, all Oregon Trail schools began the 2020-2021 school year with a Comprehensive Distance Learning program that includes options for Virtual education and Online instruction. Based on current state and county health metrics, we will remain in distance learning through January 4 and will continue to assess the metrics and our options.
Following is information about Oregon Trail School District's Comprehensive Distance Learning program. We will continue to update information as it becomes available.

Virtual Education Program
- Every Oregon Trail school will have Virtual classes at every grade level. They will be facilitated by our teachers and may be synchronous or asynchronous.
- Virtual synchronous instruction is live-streamed, so students may experience lessons in real-time, during regular school hours.
- Virtual asynchronous instruction is recorded and may be downloaded to watch at a time convenient for your family.
- Students may go back and forth between synchronous and asynchronous, ex: watch live stream, then go back into Google Classroom and re-watch recorded video as many times as necessary.
- Paper packets will be available if needed.
- Teachers will use our full curriculum, students will submit work and receive grades, and attendance will be monitored.
- Virtual classes will be scheduled for: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday; and teachers will have daily office hours to respond to parent/student questions.
- Students will be assigned to classes or courses as follows:
- Elementary students will be assigned to a grade level class at their school.
- Middle school students will be assigned to classes in the core content/subject areas of Math, Science, Social Studies, and English Language Arts. This will include assignment to advanced courses as applicable.
- High school students will be assigned to classes based on their completed forecast, to the degree possible, including AP and college-credit courses. If a chosen course is not available, a school counselor will reach out to the parent to discuss alternatives.
- Advisory classes and K-5 Community Building classes will be held on Wednesdays.
- Teachers across the district will also participate each Wednesday in grade-level and content-specific meetings, professional development, and class prep.
- Students will be expected to participate in class, synchronously or asynchronously. We will use our traditional grading system, and all students will receive a report card at the end of the semester.
- Parents will be able to view their student's assignments and progress in ParentVUE.
- Teachers will reach out to parents to discuss intervention supports, if/when needed.
- The Virtual program will transition to the Hybrid Model once the state’s metrics enable us to bring students back into our school buildings. If you are uncomfortable sending your child to school once we are able to transition to the Hybrid Model, your child may continue to participate in the virtual classes from home.

Online Instruction Program
- Online classes will be provided by Schools PLP for grades K-5, and Edgenuity for grades 6-12.
- The Online instruction is all asynchronous. In other words, all sessions are pre-recorded and may be viewed at any time.
- Students may complete their work at a time each day that is convenient to them. Assessment is built into each Online system, so progress and grades will be continuously updated for students/parents to view.
- Paper packets may be available if needed.
- Students may work at their own pace and may accelerate.
- An OTSD teacher will monitor student progress and be available to support Online students.
- Students who participate in Online instruction would continue with the Online curriculum for the full 2020-2021 school year, and would not typically transition to the Hybrid Model once schools reopen.
- The Edgenuity (grades 6-12) curriculum is distinctly different from OTSD’s curriculum, so it would be difficult to transition mid-course. However, it could be considered at the semester break, depending on the student’s participation and progress.
- Transitioning from SchoolsPLP (grades K-5) could also be considered depending on the student’s participation and progress. Transitioning from either Edgenuity or SchoolsPLP would require a consultation with your school principal.
- OTSD students who are enrolled in one of our Online programs may participate in school athletics and activities, if they are offered.
- Online courses will cover the required state standards and may not align with the Virtual courses.
- Edgenuity & SchoolsPLP teachers will be in contact with parents by the week of September 7.

Students on IEP's or 504's
Case managers will contact parents regarding their IEP/504 services, depending on the education option selected. Students will receive support from their case manager, even with the Online Instruction program. There will be interactive Google Meet options for students as appropriate, according to needs outlined in IEP’s and 504’s. We will also have a real-time virtual option for related services such as speech and occupational therapy. You will hear from your student’s case manager during the first week of school to go over their plan for the fall.
If you have questions regarding IEP/504 services, please call the Student Services office at 503-668-4949.
-
English Language Development
Sandy High students who qualify as ELD will be placed in a virtual English Language Development course.
K-8 students will receive virtual support from ELD teachers. Families will be contacted during the first week of school.
If you have questions regarding ELD services, please call the Student Services office at 503-668-4949.

Technology & Student Supplies
- We will work with families to support their technology and internet connectivity needs for Virtual Education or Online Instruction. Chromebooks and WiFi hotspots will be available for checkout, and drive-in WiFi hotspots are open at several of our school parking lots: Boring MS, Firwood Elementary; Sandy High; Welches School.
- Families may check out one Chromebook for each OTSD student in their household, as needed, and may keep the devices for the entire 2020-2021 school year.
- If you still have a Chromebook that was checked out last spring, you may continue to use it this school year. It is still checked out to you.
- If your home internet service is not robust enough for a live video stream, your student will have access to recorded sessions in Google Classroom.
- Schools will schedule dates during the first two weeks of September for families to pick up a bundle of supplies for their student, including: textbooks, workbooks, and other school-provided materials. Chromebooks and hotspots will also be distributed at that time, as needed. Schedules will be emailed to parents.
- Google Classroom login guidance will be included in each elementary student's supply bundle.
- OTSD Media Specialists will be available to assist families with issues involving web based apps, like those in the Google Suite. Training videos will also be available on the district website.
- OTSD Technology staff will be available to assist families with issues involving equipment, such as Chromebooks or wireless hotspots.
- NOTE: Chromebook content is filtered by the same system used by the school WiFi.
-
Student Attendance
- Attendance in Distance Learning will be taken on a 24-hour basis, beginning at the start of the school day or start of the class period, Monday-Friday.
- Grades K-5 attendance on Wednesday is optional.
- Grades 6-12 classes on Wednesday will be graded.
- Students are expected to login to their classes and turn in completed assignments on time.
- Attendance will be tracked through the student’s participation in a synchronous live session or viewing an asynchronous recorded session, submitting the associated work for the class/course, or interacting with the teacher through email, phone, or ParentSquare.
- We understand families have different needs and schedules during this time. While there technically is no real consequence of not meeting the state’s attendance requirements, we expect students to attend the live or recorded class sessions and submit their completed assignments within the timeline designated by the teacher. We want to ensure our students are engaged in the learning process and growing at a rate they are capable of.
- If you have concerns about the attendance expectations, please connect with your child’s teacher or principal to ensure we can partner with you in the best way possible to help your child succeed.
- Attendance in Distance Learning will be taken on a 24-hour basis, beginning at the start of the school day or start of the class period, Monday-Friday.
-
Transitioning to the Hybrid Model
- We will follow the most current health metrics and criteria for in-person instruction as determined by the Oregon Health Authority & Oregon Department of Education
- When possible we will transition to the Hybrid Model, providing instruction with A/B student cohorts attending school on alternating days.
